ENVI Mahidol Launches Sanitary Waste Management Initiative Powered by "Living Lab" Concept

On May 1, 2026, the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University (ENVI Mahidol), hosted the launch of the project “Driving Sanitary Waste Management for Sustainable Health and Balanced Environment.” Held under the "Living Lab" sustainable development framework at the Dok Kanphai Courtyard, Mahidol Learning Center (MLC), Salaya, the initiative aims to develop a tangible sanitary waste management system and establish a practical learning model for broader societal scale-up.

Highlights of the Event

  • Opening Ceremony & Awards: Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, presided over the opening ceremony and presented awards to the winners of the “Sanitary Waste Challenge.” This competition was designed to empower students to create public relations media promoting sustainable sanitary waste management. Assistant Professor Dr. Jirataya Rermmonthree, Associate Dean for Administration and Project Leader, delivered the welcoming remarks and presented an overview of the SDG Living Lab project, emphasizing the integration of academic knowledge into real-world practice.

  • Innovation Showcase: A major highlight was the unveiling of the prototype "Smart Sanitary Bin," engineered to elevate sanitary waste management standards toward better hygiene, safety, and eco-friendliness. The session was moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Witchaya Rongsayamanont, featuring the innovation development team—Assistant Professor Dr. Piangjai Peerakiatkachorn and Mr. Warong Booncherdchoo—who shared their conceptual insights, development processes, and the practical capabilities of the prototype.

  • Panel Discussion: The event featured a panel discussion titled “Comprehensive Sanitary Waste Management: From Source to End-of-Life,” moderated by Dr. Tantai Prasertkul. The panel brought together experts from academic, operational, and business sectors, including representatives from:

    • Golden Jubilee Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

    • Division of Physical and Environmental Management, Mahidol University

    • Alternative sustainable product brands such as Sunny Cotton and Joie Period Cup

Together, they exchanged comprehensive perspectives and solutions covering health, social, and environmental dimensions.

This project strongly reflects ENVI Mahidol’s role as a “Living Lab Learning Space,” bridging knowledge, innovation, and multi-sectoral collaboration to drive Thai society toward a truly efficient and sustainable environmental management system.
